Jacqueline Campbell in "When Sherman Marched North From the Sea...." puts an interseting spin on Sherman and the follow on to the march to the sea. Her theory is that far from lowering civilian moral and causing the War to end sooner than it might, it may have had the opposite effect. Shoring up resolve at home at least in Carolina. On the other hand Sherman's marchs did indicate how militarly powerless the Confederace was growing. This would have a positive impact on the support for the last stages of the War on the home front in the North.
